How SIP Analytics Prevents Telecom Fraud

How SIP Analytics Prevents Telecom Fraud

Federal regulators and leaders in the telecom industry understand that fraud presents a serious threat to businesses and consumers. That’s why they take a multipronged approach to protect people and organizations. SIP Analytics stands out as one of the most important strategies telecom networks use to mitigate fraud on their networks.

How Does SIP Analytics Work?

SIP Analytics is effective at blocking fraudulent activities because it inspects calls before they reach their destinations. It can do this by collecting and analyzing Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) traffic in real time to detect any patterns that look suspicious.

SIP Analytics learns as it analyzes data. With machine learning, it can keep up with the latest strategies scammers use to defraud consumers and businesses.

Some prominent features that make SIP Analytics effective include:

  • Real-time analysis — collecting and reviewing massive amounts of information
  • Behavioral pattern analysis — noticing changes in long-term behavior that might indicate a threat
  • Anomaly detection — recognizing sudden changes in behavior that look suspicious
  • Fraud risk score — analyzing historical and real-time threat scores to detect more serious threats that need quick mediation
  • Automated blocking — blocking high-risk threats to protect targets

Honeypot Redirection

Instead of letting suspicious calls go to their intended destinations, SIP Analytics can reroute them to decoy SIP servers called honeypots. These honeypots can then collect more information to confirm or deny those suspicions.

Honeypot redirection works by:

  • Analyzing traffic
  • Detecting threats
  • Redirecting calls to the honeypot
  • Capturing data via the honeypot
  • Analyzing the captured data
  • Taking steps to mitigate further threats from the number

CAPTCHA Gateway Uses IVR to Screen Calls

CAPTCHA uses interactive voice response to determine whether a human is on the line. It’s an automated type of reverse Turing test where a computer tests the caller to determine whether it’s a human. For example, the CAPTCHA might ask a simple question. If the caller doesn’t respond appropriately, the gateway determines that a computer made the call. The CAPTCHA gateway can then collect information to prevent the number from reaching others.

SIP Analytics Effect on Your Caller ID

SIP Analytics takes advantage of STIR/SHAKEN technology to make informed decisions about a call’s riskiness. Since its implementation, caller IDs have evolved to use the information and protect consumers. Common applications include attestation ratings, number reputation scoring, and rich call data.

Attestation Rating

SIP Analytics verifies digital signatures and assigns each phone number an attestation rating. Numbers get grouped into three ratings:

  • A Status (Full Attestation): the service provider can authorize the call’s origin, so it’s safe for consumers to answer.
  • B Status (Partial Attestation): The service provider can verify the call’s origin but cannot verify that the origin owns the number.
  • C Status (Gateway Attestation): The service provider can verify the origin but not the source (a situation most common with international calls).

Service providers and third-party apps will often block calls below an A status. Caller ID screens might also warn consumers not to answer calls below an A status.

A reliable attestation level tester can help ensure that all of your outbound numbers reach the highest rating so you can reach more of your contacts.

Number Reputation Scoring

Analytics Engines use several factors to evaluate a number’s reputation. If your outbound number has a low reputation score, caller ID screens will flag it and display a message like “Spam Likely.” Not surprisingly, very few consumers will answer calls when their phones warn them not to.

Caller ID Reputation can show you your numbers’ reputation scores to prevent flags and negative labels from influencing your contacts.

Rich Call Data (RCD)

STIR/SHAKEN has also introduced technologies that can encourage people to answer your calls. Rich call data (RCD), for example, uses the SIP header to communicate important information about your outbound calls. The more information you provide, the more likely it is that customers will answer your calls.

Branded Caller ID (BCID) takes this concept a step further by letting you add branded messaging to your calls. For instance, you might include your company logo to help customers feel safe answering your calls. You can also include information such as your company name, the department placing the call, and the reason for the call.

Protect Your Outbound Numbers With Caller ID Reputation

Every instance of fraud further degrades the public’s trust in phone calls. That’s why legitimate businesses must support regulations and security tools that protect consumers from unwanted calls. Eventually, the telecoms industry will rebuild trust, making it much easier for businesses and contact centers to reach their customers.

Unfortunately, mistakes happen. If SIP Analytics or other technologies mistakenly identify your number as a threat, it will block you from consumers.

Caller ID Reputation lets you take a proactive position by monitoring your phone numbers’ reputation daily. Want to learn more about how Caller ID Reputation can help? Send us a message now.
