Branded Calling Begins With a Trusted Caller ID

Branded Calling Begins With a Trusted Caller ID

What appears on a person’s caller ID screen can influence whether they decide to answer the call or let it go to voicemail. If it’s an unknown number, they probably won’t answer. With branded calling, however, you can enhance your company’s reputation and encourage people to pick up.

Branded calling isn’t particularly difficult, but it does require diligence, vigilance, and, perhaps most importantly, the right tools.

Caller ID Reputation® (CIDR)helps you understand the benefits of branded caller ID displays and how you can adopt a strategy that works well for your contact center.

What Determines My Caller ID Display?

Several factors can influence your call ID display, including CNAM registration, rich call data (RCD), and the consumer’s device and network. Information from your provider gets passed to the terminating service provider that the consumer uses.

The terminating service provider reviews your data and decides whether to add a warning label to the caller ID screen. Common warning labels include Spam Risk and Scam Likely. When that happens, expect your answer rate to plummet. For obvious reasons, most people don’t answer calls when their phones warn them to stay safe.

Assuming that the terminating service provider doesn’t find any problems with your call, the consumer’s caller ID will display the CNAM or RCD data associated with your number. Depending on your data, the caller ID might display useful information like nonprofit, healthcare, debt collection, or private.

What people see, therefore, depends on the data you provide.

What Is a Branded Caller ID?

A Branded Caller ID (BCID) uses rich call data (RCD) to enhance the information consumers receive when you dial them. BCID often increases answer rates because it helps improve your brand’s identity, builds trust, and gives consumers relevant information. For instance, you might use BCID to include your company logo, business name, call intent, and which department is placing the call.

Keep in mind, however, that these elements can look different depending on the network and device receiving the call. CIDR’s Device Cloud product puts you in control of your BCID by letting you see screenshots from real devices connected to popular networks.

What Is a STIR/SHAKEN Attestation Rating?

A STIR/SHAKEN attestation rating uses tokens to ensure that calls come from numbers owned by trusted individuals or businesses. There are three attestation ratings:

  • Full Attestation (A)
  • Partial Attestation (B)
  • Gateway Attestation (C)

You want all of your outbound numbers to have Full Attestation because it means the primary service provider knows that you own the numbers. In other words, the primary service provider knows that no one has spoofed your number to take advantage of consumers.

Anything below Full Attestation may result in flagged or blocked calls. If you find numbers below Full Attestation, you should find a new reliable network provider to resolve these issues.

How Can I Test My STIR/SHAKEN Attestation Level?

You’ll need an attestation tester to know your phone number’s attestation level. A reliable STIR/SHAKEN Attestation Tester will also review your network settings to ensure optimization and avoid fraud.

You can’t overestimate the importance of checking your attestation level because it influences how analytics engines perceive your dialing behavior. If you have a B or C Partial Attestation level, suspicious dialing behavior will likely lead to negative labels or blocked calls. If you have an A Full Attestation level, analytics engines are more likely to pass your call to consumers without unnecessary warnings.

Caller ID Reputation’s STIR/SHAKEN Attestation Tester uses real-time data, so you always have an accurate view of how networks and analytics engines perceive your outbound numbers.

How Do I Know If My Caller ID Is Flagged?

Low answer rates might indicate that your caller ID is flagged, but you need active phone number monitoring to know for sure.

Unfortunately for legitimate businesses that need to reach their customers, call flagging activity is on the rise as more service providers and analytics engines try to protect consumers from scams. Even as a legitimate business, your phone number’s flag score could increase because of individual calling activity, your dialing ecosystem, and consumer reports through third-party apps.

Phone number monitoring is the most reliable way to know whether your numbers have been flagged. CIDR’s Phone Number Scoring product uses real-time data to let you know when your numbers have been flagged.

In addition to aggregated data from popular services, you get screenshots that show how your numbers appear on caller ID screens.

How Can I Fix a Flagged Caller ID?

When outbound numbers get flagged, you can remediate and redress the issue by contacting carriers and analytics engines. They should remove the flags once you provide evidence that you operate as a legitimate business that doesn’t prey on consumers.

Negative flags can happen to almost any business, especially since some service providers use hyperaggressive analytics engines. You can always reach out to address the problem, but it often takes a lot of time and effort to remediate and redress a flagged number.

CIDR’s Number Redress & Remediation service makes it easy to correct mistakes. Instead of dealing with service providers directly, you get to rely on a team of professionals who can get your caller ID fixed quickly.

How Can I See What My Caller ID Looks Like?

CIDR’s Device Cloud tool lets you see how your caller ID appears on real devices connected to popular networks. You can view screenshots from multiple devices to make sure the device or network relays RCD correctly. You might find that some carriers and devices look different from others. Additionally, you’ll see if any companies have blocked or flagged your numbers.

Device Cloud lets you audit your RCD display, find opportunities for improvement, and take control of your branded caller ID.
